I See 20/20. Why Do I Need an Comprehensive Eye Exam?
I do not need an eye exam. I can see perfectly. If you have thought this, you are not alone. But seeing well and having healthy eyes are not exactly the same thing.
20/20 is a measurement of visual acuity. It tells us how clearly you can identify standardized letters or symbols at a distance. It does not tell us everything about your retina, optic nerves, eye pressure, peripheral vision, corneas, lens, or eye coordination.

Some eye conditions can develop while central vision remains excellent. Early glaucoma is a classic example. Early diabetic retinal changes may also occur before a person notices significant blur.
A comprehensive examination can include medical and eye history, vision measurement, refraction, focusing and coordination assessment, eye pressure, examination of the front of the eyes, evaluation of the retina and optic nerves, and additional testing when indicated.
Needing glasses is not a requirement for needing eye healthcare. Someone who has never worn glasses can still develop glaucoma, cataracts, retinal disease, dry eye, or other ocular conditions.
Good vision is wonderful. It just is not the same thing as knowing your eyes are healthy.
