My Child's Glasses Keep Getting Stronger. Is There AnythingWe Can Do?

Your child gets glasses. A year later the prescription is stronger, and then stronger again. Parents naturally ask, "Are we just going to keep making the glasses stronger?" Today, we can have a broader conversation.

Myopia, or nearsightedness, means distant objects appear blurry while nearby objects are generally clearer. It often begins during childhood and can progress while the eyes are growing.

Clear vision today matters, but higher levels of myopia are also associated with greater lifetime risk of certain eye diseases. Modern myopia care therefore considers both correction and progression.

Depending on the child, options may include MiSight 1 day contact lenses, orthokeratology, myopia-control spectacle lenses when appropriate, other evidence-based approaches, and regular monitoring. Age, prescription, eye health, lifestyle, maturity, and rate of progression all matter.

Healthy visual habits matter too. Regular outdoor time, breaks during prolonged near work, sensible device distance, good lighting, and recommended eye examinations can all be part of the strategy.

You do not have to wait until the prescription becomes very high. If it is changing repeatedly, ask how quickly it is progressing and whether myopia management is appropriate.
